The Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies (BICS) was founded in 2020 by aerospace entrepreneur Robert T. Bigelow to support research into the survival of human consciousness after physical death and, following from that, the nature of “the afterlife.” In 2021, the Bigelow Institute awarded a total of $1.8 million in prize money for 29 winning essays from a dozen countries judged by an expert scientific panel to offer the best evidence for survival of consciousness after death.

In 2022, BICS announced a new funding program, “The Challenge,” offering up to $1 million for multiple research grants on contact/communication with the afterlife leading to wisdom acquisition. The Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies is currently the leading organization in funding research into the survival of consciousness.
