The Institute of Noetic Sciences was founded in 1972 by Apollo 14 astronaut, Edgar Mitchell. IONS is a worldwide membership organization that conducts and sponsors research on human potential, including the role of perceptions, beliefs, attention, intention and intuition. It is especially concerned with phenomena that don't fit into the conventional scientific model. The word 'noetic' comes from the Greek word for intuitive knowing. It points towards a new science of the human mind much broader than psychology has been to date. The Institute has a campus in Petaluma, near San Francisco, and sponsors meetings, conferences, and publishes a regular review and research publications. Its research interests include subtle energies and energy medicine, exploring states of consciousness, and the role of spirit and intention in health and healing.
